Naming the Future:
“What Do We Call It? Who Cares? It Means ‘Freedom’”

In observing the quality of thinking in alienated man, it is striking to see how his intelligence has developed and how his reason has deteriorated. He takes his reality for granted; he wants to eat it, consume it, touch it, manipulate it. He does not even ask what is behind it, why things are as they are, and where they are going. You cannot eat the meaning, you cannot consume the sense, and as far as the future is concerned – après nous le deluge! (Erich Fromm, The Sane Society, p. 171 – 2)
Along with the knowledge we each possess through our bodies’ direct earth-connection, I think Erich Fromm, Sebastian de Grazia, and Karl Popper can help us to begin speaking concretely… in ‘earth’ terms… and to therefore advance the future we want. Their plain-speak… their groundedness… model how to think authentically… and so will help us model it to others.
Relinquishing the right to create and speak our own language… our own meanings, as opposed to being told what things mean… transformed us into rootless beings… easily manipulated… easily controlled.
Erich Fromm has helped me see the connection between thinking authentically – what he calls the ability to ‘reason’ – and ‘ethics’… courage.
The erosion of reason… or authentic thought… is simultaneously a passive stance towards truth… and therefore towards language (the words and thoughts that inhabit us and… if we were free… would express truth)…
…and in losing truth… which is our mooring… we lose courage.
But what hobbled the analysis of all three was… as Nikola Tesla saw… distance… (which hid the extent of ‘power’s’ organization…)
…combined with their ‘power’-designed education (that Martin Bernal describes in Black Athena) that substituted propaganda for truth…
(…through notions of ‘civilization’ and ‘stages’ toward ‘progress’… which validated a break with human (species) allegiance…)
…and taught that ‘knowledge’ meant ‘science’ meant…
…‘proof’.
Only now… with instantaneous communication… and therefore with… in a sense… the whole world working on it… could we reveal the traces of ‘power’s’ designs… unmask its disguises… glean hidden schemes… and see their thought in the destruction they’ve wrought…
…and defeat ‘power’s’ attempts to divide.
